Gershon (Sonny) Stern, C’52, D’54, graduated from the Dental School in 1954. His son, Robert, D’87, received his Penn Dental degree in 1987 and soon after married a Penn alumna. Just last year, the Sterns celebrated another momentous occasion when Robert’s son Sam, ENG’14, became their family’s latest Penn graduate.

“Penn has clearly been an important part of our lives for over three generations,” shares Robert. “My father and I feel that a Penn Dental education should be available to the most qualified students regardless of the cost.”

The Sterns’ belief in educational access mirrors one of the University’s major priorities—increasing graduate financial aid—and was the catalyst for creating the Dr. Gershon A. Stern and Dr. Robert M. Stern Scholarship Fund at the Dental School. “Private dental school tuition has become so expensive that many of the best candidates are not able to consider Penn,” Robert notes. “It’s very important to me and my father that Penn Dental Medicine continues to be a leader in dental education.”

One way to ensure that the School remains at the forefront of innovative dental instruction is to pave the way for exceptional students to attend. “We both felt an endowed scholarship, which hopefully will last for many, many years, was the best way to give back to the University that has given so much to our family,” say Sonny and Robert. Now, the Stern family legacy will live on through passionate dental students whose dreams were made reality thanks to the thoughtful giving of this father and son.
